Spec-driven development is a workflow where a written spec, then a plan, then tasks come before any code, with a human review between each step, so an AI agent builds what you actually meant. GitHub’s Spec Kit passed 130,000 stars by August 2026 and works across 30+ coding agents including Claude Code and Cursor, and is now the fastest-growing answer to messy vibe coding. I teach this hands-on with Claude Code and Cursor, working on your own repositories rather than a generic example.

The spec, plan and task loop
Step 01
Spec
Turn a vague request into a clear spec: what the change must do, and what it deliberately leaves out. The skill is precision about behaviour, not length.
Step 02
Plan
Decompose the spec into a reviewable plan. A human reads the plan before any code exists, which is the cheapest place to catch a wrong approach.
Step 03
Tasks
Small steps an agent can execute and a reviewer can actually check, with a human decision between each rather than one large opaque diff.

Review gate
Tests, standards and compliance rules encoded in the spec are checked here. What passes ships. What does not goes back to step 01, because the spec was wrong, not the agent.

Spec-Driven Development: common questions
What is spec-driven development?
It is a workflow where executable specifications are the source of truth. You write what a change should do, then a plan, then tasks, and the agent writes code against the plan, with a human reviewing between each step. With 84% of developers using or planning to use AI tools in their development process (Stack Overflow Developer Survey 2025), spec-driven development is how teams keep that output reviewable, and GitHub Spec Kit made it mainstream in 2026.
Do I need GitHub Spec Kit, or does this work with Claude Code and Cursor directly?
Both. The course covers the native workflow in Claude Code and Cursor as well as Spec Kit, which works across all of them. You leave able to run spec-driven development in whatever tool your team already uses.
Have you taught spec-driven development to a real team?
Yes. Sessions seven and eight of the ten-session team programme I deliver are spec-driven development, most recently with Shivalik Group’s IT team in Ahmedabad, so larger changes stay reviewable instead of arriving as one opaque diff. I also run the workflow daily in my own production work.
